Peaker plants, designed to provide local generation for backup when out-of-city resources as maxed out, can be found around the East River in the South Bronx, Western Queens, and Williamsburg, as well as the Seymour plant seen above.
These plants are controversial, especially the peaker barges that we will also see on the tour, and their future is up for debate as they reach the end of their permits.
The area surrounding Industry City is also full of substations owned by Con Edison, which receive high-voltage power and step it down to the voltages that we use in our homes and businesses. In addition to the existing substations, Con Edison is investing heavily in the Sunset Park Onshore Substation, which will serve as the Point of Injection for Empire Wind, a massive offshore wind project that
Finally, we will visit WindScape Brooklyn, a center for learning about Empire Wind and wind energy in general.
The project, comprised of 54 Turbines with 810 MW of capacity, is estimated to power 500,000 homes and create over 4,000 contract and permanent jobs - everything from constructing the turbines to building the cables, to repairing the components as they age.
