Ravenswood Generating Station - Rise Light & Power
Built bb Con Edison in phases over the course of the 1960s, the Ravenswood plant is the largest in NYC by capacity, thanks in large part to Big Allis, its 990 MW turbine. Powered by gas and oil, the plant is now owned by LS Power aka Rise Light & Power, whose goal is to turn the plant into a hub for storing energy generated by offshore wind.

59th St / Queensboro / Ed Koch Bridge
The only bridge in NYC with a Simon and Garfunkel song about it! Probably the only one with a Walt Whitman poem about it too. Certainly there is something special about this bridge - cantilever design with piers on Roosevelt Island, as opposed to its suspension bridge companions further down the river. We’ll get into the history of this 1909 beauty, how it used to host a trolley service, as well as the peaker plant right next to it.

Vernon Peaker Plant
It As opposed to Ravenswood, which runs pretty much constantly, peaker plants only turn on during the periods of highest demand - less than 30 days worth of hours in a year. We’ll visit the peaker plant on Vernon Boulevard and talk about the past, present, and future of this interesting aspect of the electrical grid / marketplace
